For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

Welcome to our new reader, Ms. Lazzari, boss of the council's Culture Department, who has complained about my last article. Italian speakers can read her complaint and my answer in the Italian part of the site. I confess to feeling flattered at being read and complained about in the corridors of power! If such they be ...
These corridors were unable to stop the Dal Molin military base, and, despite depriving beggars of what alms we choose to give them, seem unable to provide basic law and order in Campo Marzo, judging by the GDV posters I see on my way to the library in the morning. Continua a leggere

Two little boys

Well Carnival is over, at least for the moment for the notorious Diego Fontana, now suspended from his duties as Baron of the Vicenza districts, who at the stroke of a pen cancelled fifteen years of hard work by the librarian and teachers in District 7 (Circoscrizione 7) who provided modestly priced courses in music and languages to an enthusiastic local populace. As already stated in an earlier article, Fontana's decision was brought to the notice of Variati, through his sidekick Bulgarini, and to Ms. Lazzari, neither of whom deigned to reply.

Well, on Friday I was cycling across Piazza dei Signori, when to my surprise, I saw a large balloon with AIM written on it. Readers will know that AIM managers are under judicial investigation for their role in managing the polluting platform in Marghera, so I was surprised to see that they have turned over a new leaf. They were informing us that AIM is working for a cleaner Vicenza, with an exhibition to show little groups of school children what they are doing. I was a bit mesmerised - after all, after the long cold spell, the air was almost balmy.

Scrooge is alive and kicking

As the cold spell continues, you might feel like giving a beggar a euro to have a coffee in a bar in order to thaw out. Well, think again. In Vicenza, not only is it illegal to beg, but the local police boast of their prowess at enforcing the anti-begging law allowing them to confiscate the money a beggar has in his or her pocket. Indeed, Councillor Dalla Pozza declares himself proud of their actions.

Mayor Variati sends home playschool teachers instead of Bulgarini, Fontana et al
Domenica 5 Febbraio 2012 alle 00:38
Temperatures plummet - and according to local folklore they should be rising. Traditionally the last three days of January, the 'giorni della merla', or the days of the blackbird, during which a white bird took her children into a chimney to keep warm, are the coldest of the year. And of course, when she came out, she was covered in soot. Immediately after is the church feast celebrating the meeting of St. Simeon with the infant Jesus when the Madonna presented Him at the temple. The Candelora in Italian.

English news: Scots and Vicentini share a desire ...

It's not often the English press mentions Vicenza. On Friday 27th, the Guardian, a left of centre daily mentioned a meeting held in our town in December, at which Mr. Bossi of the Northern League suggested the redrawing of Europe's borders, with a new country called Padania, which would include parts of Switzerland, Austria, France, and Germany. It seems inhabitants of the other lucky countries having their maps redrawn have not yet been informed.

The tragic sinking of the Concordia off the island of Giglio has brought to international attention what seem to be two sides of Italy - the famous order to the fleeing captain to return to his post - ‘vada a bordo, cazzo!'. This could be a metaphor for our newspaper's message to mayor Variati. Stop protecting vested interests, start cleaning up the local council as promised, instead of remaining silent.
One of our ongoing enquiries regards a council employee, a certain Diego Fontana, who has been acting manager of the council department responsible for the outlying areas of the town, or ‘decentramento' in Italian. Continua a leggere

Dear Readers, so why does VicenzaPiù have a column in English? The simple answer is because more and more people use the language. Italians who communicate with foreigners, American soldiers, African immigrants, ex-pat English teachers, and so on. We are not sure who our readers will be, so please identify yourselves! And tell us what you would like us to write about. As to me, I'm an ex-pat English teacher, who has observed the city's vagaries of fortune over the last three decades. When I came here, I knew little about the place. ‘Somewhere near Venice', my girlfriend had told me.
